The 2018 Reading Challenge - #42 - A Cyberpunk Book

Hello book worm :)
A quick little review for the cateory - A Cyberpunk Book:

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
by Philip K. Dick

WHAT IS CYBERPUNK?
Cyberpunk is the combination of high or advanced technology and a more broken down social order or gritty society (hence the cyber, and the punk). So fancy advanced technology plus dystopian elements equals cyberpunk. The term itself comes from a short story by Bruch Bethke, Cyberpunk.
It feels like there has been a recent resurgence in cyberpunk on the screen, with Blade Runner 2049 and Altered Carbon both coming out in recent years. The original Blade Runner is still looked at stylistically as a model for cyberpunk visuals and tied together the idea of high technology with a grittier underside. With the increased screen time granted to the genre, people have become increasingly curious about the source material.¹

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (retitled Blade Runner: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in some later printings) is a science fiction novel by American writer Philip K. Dick, first published in 1968.
The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco, where Earth's life has been greatly damaged by nuclear global war. Most animal species are endangered or extinct from extreme radiation poisoning, so that owning an animal is now a sign of status and empathy, an attitude encouraged towards animals.
The book served as the primary basis for the 1982 film Blade Runner, and many elements and themes from it were used in its 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049.
The main plot follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter who is tasked with "retiring" (i.e. killing) six escaped Nexus-6 model androids, while a secondary plot follows John Isidore, a man of sub-par IQ who aids the fugitive androids.
In connection with Deckard's mission, the novel explores the issue of what it is to be human. Unlike humans, the androids are said to possess no sense of empathy. ¹

Again a little summary from goodreads:

*
"It was January 2021, and Rick Deckard had a license to kill.
Somewhere among the hordes of humans out there, lurked several rogue androids. Deckard's assignment--find them and then..."retire" them. Trouble was, the androids all looked exactly like humans, and they didn't want to be found!"

I´ll give it a 8 out of 10
I was confused to often throughout reading this ;) hahaha only due to the fact that its not been to ong ago that I´ve seen the most resent Blade Runner movie and I so often tried to compare the story of this book with the one in the film...no you´re right, no way and I just could not stop doing that and remind myself that its not possible  until like page 150 ;) hahaha horrible me
Well besides that I really liked the book a lot - I loved thy undertone of the narrator and the whole plot itself and I really need to re-watch the first Blade Runner film soon ;)
The whole plot starts a bit slow maybe but overall I liked it as its used and needed to set the scene and explain the circumstances and what happened to lead everything to where it is. Usually I am not the biggest fan of such a slow start (says the Tolkien fan ;) hahaha) especially when I know I have to finish the book in a week...I just am drawn away from reading why to easy with such beginnings.
Otherwise I like the flow in the story and how its thrilling and exciting on and on and how you almost wait for the next twist and nevertheless the twists are unexpected. So after finally settling in the right story ...and not in the wrong movie....I was confused because so often you have no idea what is going on...well you think you do but then...a twist and again you just wonder what is real and what is fake.
I enjoyed reading this book even tho there are many unanswered question but you just have to find your own answers I guess ;)
And lets hope our world wont look like Deckards on a few years!

For a little more inspiration and some alternatives:
Here are some amazing lists which helped me decide:

Which book did you choose for this category?
Did you read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and did you know it is the book to the movie Blade Runner? I did not even know there was a book before the film ;)

With lots of love
