The 2018 Reading Challenge - #38 - A Book with an Ugly Cover
Hello bookworms :)
Today´s category was a challenge for me and its so 100% personal and subjective ;)
How defines what ugly is and when is a book cover ugly...
Since I am a huge victim if buying book with pretty or amazingly designed covers I hardly have a book with an ugly cover and I really did not want to buy any book only because its cover is ugly. So I chose this book and its cover is not...well...pretty ;)
Im Westen nichts Neues or
All Quiet on the Western Front
by Erich Maria Remarque
All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues, lit. 'In the West Nothing New') is a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a German veteran of World War I.
The book describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental stress during the war, and the detachment from civilian life felt by many of these soldiers upon returning home from the front.
The novel was first published in November and December 1928 in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung and in book form in late January 1929.
The book and its sequel, The Road Back (1930), were among the books banned and burned in Nazi Germany.
All Quiet on the Western Front sold 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first 18 months in print.
In 1930, the book was adapted as an Academy-Award-winning film of the same name, directed by Lewis Milestone. It was adapted again in 1979 by Delbert Mann, this time as a television film starring Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine. ¹
Again a little summary from goodreads:
*
"This is the testament of Paul Bäumer, who enlists with his classmates in the German army of World War I. These young men become enthusiastic soldiers, but their world of duty, culture, and progress breaks into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches.
Through years of vivid horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the hatred that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another – if only he can come out of the war alive."
*
I´ll give it a 7 out of 10
Well where to start...well lets just say I liked it and I do not regret reading it ;) That sounds kind of awful, doesn´t it ;) No I really mean it, its a good book and one everyone who is interested in the matter should read. I am not necessarily interested to much in the matter personally but I liked it anyways, not going to be my fave but I´d read it again.
